US grid adds 20.2 gigawatt-hours of battery storage

Utility-scale projects in Arizona, Texas, and California drove quarterly installations to double national operational capacity over 18 months.

American power networks installed 20.2 gigawatt-hours of battery storage capacity during the second quarter of 2026, marking the largest three-month expansion in domestic history.12 The quarterly additions pushed total operating utility-scale storage across the country to 165 gigawatt-hours, doubling the nationwide base in 18 months.23 The volume deployed between April and June delivered enough storage capacity to meet the daily electrical consumption of roughly 700,000 households.1

Large grid-connected installations accounted for approximately 18 gigawatt-hours of the quarterly volume, according to a joint market analysis released by the Solar Energy Industries Association and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.21 Seven individual projects with capacities exceeding one gigawatt-hour entered commercial operation during the period.14 Four of those utility-scale facilities sit in Arizona, two operate in California, and one is located in Utah.2

Arizona led all states by commissioning 6.2 gigawatt-hours, which established the highest single-quarter storage total recorded by any state.25 Texas added 3.8 gigawatt-hours, while developers in California brought 3.6 gigawatt-hours online.25 Standalone battery systems made up 56 percent of the new utility-scale additions, with the remaining 44 percent co-located with utility-scale solar arrays to capture low-cost midday generation for evening dispatch.24

Geographic concentration and grid demand

The geographic spread of installations reflects shifting load demands and heavy solar deployment across western and southern power markets. More than 74 percent of the capacity commissioned during the second quarter entered service across states won by Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, led by Arizona, Texas, and Utah.24 During the first eight months of 2026, utility-scale batteries discharged more electricity into American transmission grids than they supplied throughout all of 2025.2

"Energy storage is no longer just a California and Texas story anymore," said Shan Tomouk, energy storage and energy lead at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.2 "We are seeing strong pipeline growth in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Colorado, and several other states."2 Tomouk noted that quarterly momentum rested primarily on a limited group of major infrastructure assets.1

Tim Pawlenty, president and chief executive of the Solar Energy Industries Association, said in a statement that storage functions as a reliability mechanism that stabilizes energy supplies, absorbs new generation, and helps contain consumer electricity expenses.26 The trade group observed that rapid procurement has been driven by regional reliability mandates, grid congestion, and extreme summer temperatures that elevate peak residential air conditioning demands after sunset.

Data centers surge as home batteries drop

Behind-the-meter systems, which sit on customer properties rather than utility substations, showed sharply divergent trajectories across commercial and residential sectors. Commercial and industrial installations expanded to 1.8 gigawatt-hours during the second quarter, climbing 52 percent above the 1.2 gigawatt-hours deployed during the same quarter in 2025.36 Data centers accounted for roughly three-quarters of new commercial battery capacity, deploying storage alongside onsite power generation to manage abrupt computing loads and hedge against transmission interconnection delays.12

By contrast, residential battery installations fell to 657 megawatt-hours during the quarter, representing a 27 percent drop compared to the second quarter of 2025.2 Benchmark Mineral Intelligence projects total residential storage additions will drop 16 percent over the full year after rising 56 percent during 2025.2 Analysts attributed the contraction to the expiration of the federal Section 25D residential clean energy tax credit at the end of 2025, which pulled household purchases forward into that year.26

Supply chain composition remains centered abroad even as domestic manufacturing expands. Nearly all battery cells entering commercial service in the United States continue to originate in China, though domestic assembly operations complete some finished pack assemblies.1 Tesla opened its third Megafactory in Texas during the quarter, creating 50 gigawatt-hours of annual manufacturing capacity and initiating shipments of units containing domestically manufactured lithium iron phosphate cells.2

Federal tax guidelines implemented this year require projects to curb reliance on imported cells to secure full subsidy values, alongside Section 301 tariff adjustments on overseas hardware.14 Tomouk said domestic factories will face challenges meeting aggregate industry demand before 2030, which could raise component pricing.1 Following the second-quarter additions, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence raised its projection for cumulative domestic storage capacity to 683 gigawatt-hours by 2030.23
