Airbnb bars hosts from assigning checkout chores
New house rules taking effect November 20 ban demands to wash dishes, strip bedsheets, and haul trash off-site.

Airbnb has updated its community rules to prohibit hosts from requiring guests to perform time-consuming cleaning tasks before checkout.12
The policy applies to all reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026.23 Under the revised framework, hosts may no longer instruct departing guests to wash and put away dishes, strip sheets from beds, run laundry, or haul garbage away from the property.12
Instead, the platform limits checkout duties to brief and basic preparations. Hosts can still ask travelers to drop used dishes into the kitchen sink, gather soiled towels into a pile, separate garbage into indoor recycling bins, and switch off lights or climate controls upon departure.13

The company said in an announcement on its website that the adjustment followed persistent traveler frustration over complex departure chore lists.34 In a public statement, Airbnb stated that while house rules help visitors understand expectations, the community reported that checkout lists had grown onerous, confusing, and difficult to manage.34 The company said it redesigned the rules system to keep host requests reasonable and prevent unwelcome surprises.34
Stricter boundaries on chore lists
Under the revised system, Airbnb established seven standard house rules that property owners can select when building a listing, alongside a limited set of custom requests.34 Those requirements must appear in a dedicated rules section on the listing page prior to booking.21 The company explicitly prohibited hosts from adding chore instructions later through private messages, notes left inside the rental, or wall signs posted around the property.12
Property listings that retain detailed chore expectations will carry an automatic warning label indicating that the stay includes cleaning requests.1 If an owner attempts to enforce chores outside the guidelines, Airbnb said it will flag the listing, issue warnings, or reduce its visibility in search results.23 Hosts retain the right to appeal flagged rules.34

The policy also curtails other disputed management practices across the booking platform.32 Property owners are now barred from issuing direct fines against guests for cleaning lapses.25 In addition, hosts may not require guests to sign separate supplemental contracts or surrender personal identification documents, except in specific cases mandated by local laws or homeowners association regulations.23
Host reactions and environmental exceptions
The revised policy generated immediate discussion among property operators.14 Several hosts raised concerns on community forums that relaxing guest checkout duties could create sanitary problems, leaving dirty plates to draw pests or overburdening professional turnover staff who face tight check-in windows.1 Other owners argued that travelers who dislike cleaning checklists could choose to book elsewhere.1
Airbnb outlined specific situations where properties can maintain exemptions to the cleaning restrictions.21 The platform stated that rules reflecting genuine local health or safety conditions remain permissible.24 Hosts operating in wilderness areas may require guests to secure refuse inside animal-proof receptacles in bear territory.12 Similarly, properties located in drought-stricken regions may request that guests shorten shower lengths to comply with municipal water restrictions.24
Standard wear and tear remains covered by the platform's AirCover damage protection framework.25 Airbnb reminded hosts that cleaning fees added to reservations are intended to cover typical turnaround work handled by professional cleaning staff, such as running laundry, vacuuming floors, and sanitizing surfaces.54 Guests remain responsible for leaving homes without excessive mess, such as unwashed pots left to mold or carpet stains, but hosts cannot levy monetary penalties when visitors leave dishes resting in the sink.52
