Study ties Sasol Secunda emissions to 1,000 annual deaths
A health analysis tallies nearly $1 billion in annual damages as South African prosecutors prepare fresh environmental charges.

Emissions from Sasol's flagship Secunda facility are linked to approximately 1,000 premature deaths each year, according to research published by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.1 The Finland-based nonprofit calculated that air pollution generated by the complex carries an annual health burden of nearly $1 billion.1
The plant in Mpumalanga is widely recognized as the single largest individual site emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet.1 Its operations place South Africa's statutory decarbonization goals in direct tension with its macroeconomic reliance on the industrial group.1

Renewed criminal investigation
Beyond atmospheric emissions, Sasol faces renewed scrutiny over historical waste management at the Secunda operation. Regulators indicated that they plan to reinstate criminal charges against the company following allegations of unauthorized chemical effluent releases into local water networks.12

On August 4, 2026, the National Prosecuting Authority executed search warrants at the Secunda site to seize digital records and physical documentation while company executives appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.2 Authorities issued the warrants under the Criminal Procedure Act and the Cybercrimes Act to review data concerning phases three and four of the Benfield plant, as well as to determine whether staff provided inaccurate information to state inspectors.23
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said it expects to bring the criminal prosecution before the Mbombela High Court in September 2026.2 The state had provisionally withdrawn an earlier six-count indictment in July 2025 to examine 16 supplementary witness statements.23
Whistleblower disclosures
The criminal docket stems from a 2019 protected disclosure by Ian Erasmus, a former Sasol process artisan.24 Erasmus reported that a broken sewer valve at the Benfield unit caused hazardous chemical waste, including vanadium, diethanolamine, and potassium carbonate, to flow into the Klipspruit River, a tributary feeding the Vaal River catchment that supplies roughly 19 million people.25
Erasmus reported that he first detected an inoperable valve in 2012 and submitted repair requests that went unaddressed for years before he approached environmental regulators and statutory bodies.5 The state's indictment includes allegations of unlawful discharge, operating without required authorizations, and the unlawful victimization and dismissal of Erasmus following his disclosure.42 Erasmus entered the national Witness Protection Programme in April 2024.2

Under South African environmental law, potential penalties for the statutory waste offenses include fines of up to 10 million rand, or about $550,000, along with possible imprisonment terms.4 Environmental authorities confirmed they also intend to conduct an administrative review of Sasol's waste management licences under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, a statutory process that operates independently of the criminal court trial and could lead to licence suspension or revocation.2
Sasol defense and denial
Sasol has consistently denied criminal wrongdoing regarding the effluent allegations and stated that it sees no legal basis for prosecution over the Benfield operations.13 In presentations to lawmakers and regulatory filings, the company maintained that chemical streams containing vanadium, diethanolamine, and potassium carbonate remain confined to concrete-lined operational areas fitted with physical containment barriers.3
The company said that process drainage and wash water flow through dedicated chemical sewer lines into internal containment dams, known as API dams, where liquids are treated and recycled for industrial cooling rather than discharged into natural watercourses.34 Sasol asserted that even in the event of a mechanical failure or open valve, effluent cannot enter the Klipspruit or Vaal river systems because the infrastructure diverts runoff into retention reservoirs.3 Unusable chemical residues are collected into specialized containers and transferred to licensed disposal landfills, according to company statements.3
Sasol also maintained that Erasmus's departure from the company was a voluntary, mutually agreed separation rather than an unlawful dismissal.2 As prosecutors finalize evidence for the High Court, the dual pressures of regional water enforcement and international emissions research continue to test the industrial producer's long-term operating model.
